I am always surprised how multi-faceted archaeology is, due to the many different skills used in the discipline. For example, my dissertation last year required skills from social anthropology, botany, palaeobotany and statistics. And I find my art skills come in handy often for graphs, diagrams, and maps. There is a type of freedom found in this approach to research. The freedom to choose any topic to study using whatever skills are needed simply because I enjoy doing it.
