I have always loved both the social sciences and the biological sciences, and being a biological anthropologist allows – and actually really requires – engagement in both. What has been most exciting and enriching in my work investigating the genetic history of Pacific peoples is to see the way that the DNA data that we collect can be interpreted in such a way that it supports traditional knowledge and vice versa. To be able to demonstrate that the two forms of knowledge can so beautifully go hand-in-hand and not contradict one another brings so much more power to both perspectives.
