My journey into a physiology research career has involved the unexpected experience of learning to accept changing my mind. Sometimes described as stubborn and with know-it-all tendencies, I’ve learnt that one of the most valuable characteristics in STEM is an openness to accepting new ideas based on new, convincing evidence. For me, science is about the pleasure of discovery. In the process of seeking new knowledge, I often encounter something unexpected, that might contradict my initial hypothesis or opinion, and to modify my beliefs accordingly is a challenging, humbling, yet empowering experience.
